Staff Engagement and Retention: The Flipside of Turnover

Written by Amy Bolson

July 19, 2023

What is staff engagement? Staff engagement is the degree to which staff feel passion or enthusiasm for their work and the organization. Strong engagement is a precursor to good retention of key employees. As shared in a post earlier this week, turnover can be good but if you’re losing your top employees because they’re not engaged, it’s costing your business significantly.

Are you doing engagement/satisfaction surveys regularly? What form do they take?

  • Pulse (handful of quick questions more frequently);
  • Annual;
  • Less frequent

How do you incentivize staff to complete the surveys without it feeling coercive? What kind of response rate are you seeing?

What do you do with the data received? How and how often are you communicating your understanding of the information, how you’ll continue leaning into top areas, and how you’ll work to mitigate the bottom areas?

Do you do individual stay interviews with top performers to identify opportunities and pain points?

Do you do exit interviews when top performers voluntarily leave the business to understand their reasons and see what opportunities for improvement there may be to keep top performers engaged in the future?

Are you asking questions to evaluate employee perception of workplace culture, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in your engagement surveys, stay interviews, and/or exit interviews?

Do you need support with creating a plan to understand employee engagement and make adjustments to your processes to meet engagement and retention goals?  I would love to partner with your leaders to ensure you have the support needed to meet those goals.
