A few weeks ago, I shared a post about best practices for introducing pay transparency into your organization, in this post, we’ll talk about how pay transparency improves hiring and employee retention results.

First, let’s make sure to have a shared understanding of what pay transparency means. It refers to the idea of openly discussing salaries and compensation with employees. This practice has been shown to have a positive impact on both hiring and retention. It also improves both internal and external equity related to employee pay.

There are many ways that businesses can show their commitment to pay transparency. Those ways can range from sharing salary ranges for each role in the organization with employees, to sharing salary ranges for each role in posted announcements for open positions (keep in mind, this is now required in some municipalities and states), to sharing compensation for members of the executive team (again, this is required for some kinds of organizations), to sharing compensation for all staff within the organization. The type of pay transparency that is appropriate for your business will vary depending on the organization type, location, and organizational culture.

Here are just some of the benefits of pay transparency for your business:

  1. When employees know how much their colleagues are earning, they are more likely to feel valued and appreciated. In turn, this can improve morale and productivity.
  2. Can reduce feelings of jealousy or resentment that occurs when staff don’t trust that they are being paid fairly in comparison to colleagues in the same or similar roles;
  3. When employees feel that they are being paid fairly and that their contributions are being recognized, they are more likely to be motivated to perform at their best. This can lead to higher job satisfaction and lower turnover rates.
  4. When candidates are aware of the pay scale for a role, they are more likely to apply and more likely to accept an offer because they feel they are being offered fair compensation;
  5. Can increase the diversity of the candidate pool as BIPOC and female candidates may be more likely to apply for a position when they see that any candidate for the role will be paid within the posted salary range because it adjusts the power imbalance that otherwise exists between potential employees and employers;
  6. Saves employers time and money by eliminating candidates for whom the pay range doesn’t meet their minimum requirements;
  7. Significantly increases a culture of trust and fairness as it ensures there is no gender or racial gap in pay within the organization.

Embracing pay transparency is a strategic move that can have a positive impact on your organization’s hiring and retention results. By implementing transparent pay practices and communicating openly with your employees, you can build a stronger, more engaged workforce that is committed to your organization’s success.
