As leaders, its crucial that staff see our behavior as above reproach but that doesn’t mean we don’t make errors. Humans aren’t infallible and we all make mistakes. How we respond to those mistakes is key. For example, if we acknowledge the error, accept responsibility for it rather than seeking to blame others, and correct the error to the best of our ability, we are modeling the behavior or leading by example to show what we want to see from others within our organizations.

Other key things that help others see that we value ethics:

  • Having a clear set of policies and procedures related to ethical behaviors and organization expectations and involve a variety of staff levels in the process to ensure increased buy-in;
  • Providing training to all staff about these policies and procedures;
  • Ensuring that staff at all levels of the organization are equally accountable for meeting these expectations;
  • Encouraging open communication and opportunities for staff to ask about or address things that might be concerning them and actively considering alternative perspectives;
  • When staff acknowledge their own errors, reward that self-accountability;
  • When staff don’t acknowledge their own errors, ensure appropriate investigation, implement necessary corrections, and address concerns with the individuals as appropriate;
  • Actively seek constructive feedback from staff, colleagues, and other leaders to help avoid blind spots;
  • Actively engage in self-reflection and self-improvement to ensure a continuous learning mindset.

Ethical leadership is an ongoing process that requires consistent effort and commitment but by demonstrating these behaviors and actively promoting an ethical culture, we can earn the trust of staff, colleagues, and other leaders.
